The National Audubon Society ~ Christmas Bird Count
Every year between December 14th - January 5th the National Audubon Society (NAS) conducts their seasonal bird survey called the Christmas Bird Count or CBC. There are over 2000 counts in the Western hemisphere. Each count is a one-day survey of an area. The areas covered are in 15-mile diameter circles that have been established by the NAS and are in the same place each year. Each circle is run by a NAS CBC compiler who coordinates the survey of that circle.
The compiler picks a date between the Dec. 14th - Jan. 5th and recruits' participants to look for all the birds they can find that day, counting the species and individual birds for a total tally of what was seen or heard that day.
Christmas Bird Counts are fun to participant in, and many birders do more than one in the season, some do five or six counts!
You don't have to be a seasoned or expert birder to join in a CBC and all compilers welcome new birders.
If you live within a CBC circle you can join in the fun and count the birds at your feeders, in the yard or on your farm.
