My affiliation with the Brooks Bird Club began with my parents’ investment in life memberships for their offspring.  My first club event, at the age of 7, was a week-end of foray in WV’s eastern panhandle.  Ten years later, as a Weirton resident, I walked into the clubroom mystified to hear my name.  Carolyn and Dorothy Conrad remembered that meeting ten years earlier, recalling it for their club guest.  Forays, seasonal meetings, and occasional Board service across the years have heightened this early appreciation for the warm fellowship and generous instruction characteristic of the Brooks Bird Club.

Through a membership in a local hiking club in 1962, I found out that several participants were also members of the BBC, one of which anonymously sent me a membership to the BBC in 1963. I have served on the Board of Trustees and am currently Membership Secretary.  My husband Carl and I directed Forays from 1995-2007.

A native West Virginian, I have loved our Appalachian's natural history since a kid.  Already hooked on birding, fall weekends in the 80s at the AFMO banding station sealed the deal. There, I tried to absorb as much as I could from the lifetimes of experience and knowledge of the many BBC members I met.  I have strived to build upon that foundation, both professionally including as past WV state director of The Nature Conservancy, and personally by service on the boards of various conservation groups.

I was introduced to the BBC by my middle school Principal LeJay Graffious.  My first BBC Foray was at Pipestem in 2000.  The club encouraged my growth and wonder in the natural world. Which heavily influenced my decisions to go to West Virginia Wesleyan College for environmental science and second degree from West Virginia University environmental geoscience. In my time in the club, I have written a number of reports for the Redstart. The club also help lead me to my job working for the US Forest Service. Over the years, I have seen wonderful things and met wonderful people.

My earliest memory of the Brooks Bird Club was delightedly, at a very young age, holding a snake along the roadside on a hike with my parents and many of the other legends of the organization. My fond memories involve the extended bird family that welcomed us Slater kids when our family joined the local chapter for monthly potluck dinners that included meeting, programs, and especially nature quizzes.

After retiring from teaching in NM, someone asked what I wanted to do.  I said, I want to move back to my home state and see warblers. Well, I did!  After attending my first Foray in 2018, I was hooked.  I bird nearly every day throughout the year with fellow birders from the Mountwood Bird Club (MBC).  I have acquired many birding skills from the wonderful birders of the BBC Forays and the MBC.  I’m excited to pass on as much enthusiasm for birding to others as has been passed on to me.

I grew up with the BBC and after some time away I am thrilled to be back and serving on the board.
In addition to the BBC, I am a member of the Northern VA Bird Club, a friend of the Clifton Institute, and a Certified Master Naturalist in Virginia.
My spare time is spent birding, traveling, hiking and spending time with my new grandson, Jaxson.
