Winter Eagle Surveys 2017
The Winter Eagle Surveys are being conducted by The Bibbee Nature Club and The Mountwood Bird Club both affiliates of the BBC.
Parkersburg Area Winter Eagle Survey Mountwood Bird Club
January 11, 2017
Mountwood Bird Club (MBC) outing was the annual Eagle Watch, rescheduled from last week.
Attending by car were Lucine Wright, Veronique Mathaux, Teresa Glasco, Archie Carpenter, Pat Collins and John Benedetti. The boat crew insisted of Matt Bristol, Jason White, Bryce Sayre, Kelly Rene, and Dick Esker.
The boat travelled from above Willow Island L&D to below Hannibal L&D. The car stopped at Willow Island L&D both sides, French Creek Boat Ramp in Belmont, the parsonage on Green starred in Newport, Dan's Run, Newell's Run, the old sand quarry below WI L&D on the Ohio side, Frontier Boat Ramp, Grandview - opposite Grandview Island, across the river from the Bald Eagle nest above Friendly, Old Lock #15 boat docks & ramp, rest stop near Sardis, Hannibal L&D both sides, and Ben's Run.

Southern West Virginia Eagle Survey Bibbee Nature Club

It was a very cold and snowy day for the 12th Annual Winter Eagle Survey along the rivers in Southern WV.
Jim Phillips reported that even with the cold weather, there was plenty of eagle activity. Thirteen observers found a total of 50 bald eagles and 1 golden eagle over the 4 hours of observation.
Jim positions groups in numerous locations along the New, Bluestone, and Greenbrier Rivers. The locations and numbers of eagles seen were as follows:
Mouth of the Bluestone River: 23- BAEA (3- adults; 2- sub-adults; 4- 3rd year; 3- 2nd year; 11- immatures) Also, one Peregrine Falcon. Rt. 20 Overlook: 6- BAEA (2- adults; 1- 3rd year; 1- 1st year; 2- immatures) Bellepoint Park: 1- BAEA (adult); 1- GOEA (immature) Mouth of Madams Creek: No Eagles Brooks Overlook: 2- BAEA (1- adult; 1- immature) Rt. 122: 16- BAEA (3- adults; 3- 4th year; 10- immatures) Red Sulphur Springs: 2- BAEA (adults)

Conditions: 12-22 degrees, 10-100% cloud cover, NNW wind 0-8 mph, visibility 2-10 miles and light flurries with 2-3" snow on the ground.

Forty-two participants located 40 bald eagles (at eight sites along New River and its tributaries in Monroe, Summers and Raleigh Counties in West Virginia).
The breakdown for the birds follows: 13 adults, 17- 1st year birds, 7- 2nd year birds and 3- 4th year birds.
Four nests were monitored during the day. Two had two eggs and two were presumed to have eggs based on the behavior of the adult birds.
The day was topped off when, about 200 people, cheered at the release of a young female bald eagle by the Three Rivers Avian Center of Brooks, WV.
