June 10-19, 2011 Foray
Miscellaneous Camp Information

Headquarters for the 2011 Foray will be Camp Kidd located near Parsons, W.Va. just off State Route 72.  It is situated on a flat clearing near the Cheat River.  The territory will cover all of Tucker County including Canaan Valley and Dolly Sods.  The diversity of elevations, the camp at river level about 1,000 feet and Dolly Sods at over 4,000 feet and habitats of second and third growth forests as well as bogs and open meadows will prove interesting as it was during our last visit in 2006.

Accommodations are comfortable and include a large dining hall and meeting room with adequate space for library and lab.  Campers will be housed in dormitories for the men and four or five to a room facilities for the women.  Plenty of hot and cold running water in the showers and indoor flush toilets make this a comfortable camp.  There’s plenty of room for tent camping if desired and electric and water hook-ups for RV’s or camping trailers.

The program will emphasize birds.  You will have opportunities to join in the Breeding Surveys, Bird Population Studies and Early Morning Bird Walks.  There will be field work in Flowering Plants, Mammals, Herptiles and Amphibians.  A program of lectures and field trips for the scholarship students and other campers who wish to participate will be part of the program.  Foray Directors will be Greg Eddy and Jay Buckelew.  They will be assisted by others on the Foray Committee.  You will be asked to help.  COME PREPARED!

Instructors at Foray are all experienced field biologists, some professional, others amateurs, but all specialists in their field of nature.  Their informal leadership and enthusiasm to help people should make Foray both enjoyable and educational.

Rules governing Foray are few.  We expect you to contribute your share toward making Foray a success.  While the club cannot be held responsible for any individual, all precautions will be taken to safeguard each participant and all attendees will be covered by liability insurance.

Meals will be good and furnished by our camp cooks.  There will be early morning snacks for the early birds to hold them over until breakfast.  There will be two all day excursions for which bag lunches will be supplied.

Things to bring:  towel, soap, rain gear, walking shoes, boots, cameras, binoculars, hangers, flashlight and notebook.  You will need to bring bedding, including a pillow or sleeping bag.

Bring books on natural history to loan to the library.  BE SURE your name is in them!

Don’t forget to take your own drinking mug, keeping in mind there will be a contest during camp to award a valuable prize for the most unique and interesting one.

Bring a plain T-Shirt if you wish to participate in the “botany” craft project.

The “silent auction” will be held again during Foray as a means of raising scholarship money.  Donated items to auction are needed and much appreciated.  The donor may put a minimum bid on donations, if desired.

Transportation to and from camp will be up to each person.  Camp is located just off State Route 72 approximately four miles north of Parsons or ten miles south of Rowlesburg.  Watch for BBC signs.
