June 11-20, 2010 Foray Misc. Camp Info.

Headquarters for the 2010 Foray will be Camp Galilee, Terra Alta, West Virginia located in Preston County.  This will be our 71st annual Foray.  The last time we were there was for our 66th annual BBC Foray held June 10 through June 18, 2005.

Preston County consists of 412,800 acres in north-central West Virginia, sharing borders with Pennsylvania to the north and Maryland to the east.  The northwestern area consists of rolling foothills, ranging from 1500 to 2300 ft. in elevation.  The rocks are primarily Pennsylvanian.  The southeastern part is much more mountainous with summits up to 3380 ft. on Backbone Mt. near the Maryland border.  The mountainous southeast is separated from the western hills by the almost continuous barrier formed by Laurel Ridge and Briery Mt.  The mountain ridge extends from the state’s southwest corner to the Maryland State line near Cranesville.  The lowest elevation is 875 ft. on the Cheat River near the Monongalia Co. line.  There should be a variety of birds and plants because of the diversity of habitat and elevation found in Preston County.  Ref.: A.R. Buckelew, Jr., “Area Survey – 1979 Foray”; The Redstart Vol. 47, #1 Jan. 1980

Camp Galilee is situated on a sprawling, semi-hilly, grassy lawn with trees interspersed.  It fronts Terra Alta Lake.  It has many wooden cabins with each accommodating five to eight beds.  The designated showers & restrooms for men and women are large facilities which will easily handle both cabin and camping reservations.   The dining hall is a separate building from the large activities building.  The level camping area is adjacent to the road.  There will be electrical hook-ups but no water.

The program will emphasize birds and you will have opportunities to join in the Breeding Surveys, Bird Population Studies, and early morning bird walks.  There will also be field work in flowering plants, mammals, herptiles, insects, and amphibians.  A program of lectures and field trips for campers who wish to participate will be part of the daily activities.  Foray directors will be Greg Eddy and A.R. “Jay” Buckelew.  They will be assisted by others on the Foray Committee.  You will be asked to help.  Come Prepared!

Many of the participants at Foray are experienced field biologists, some professional, others amateurs, but all specialists in their field of nature.  Their informal leadership and enthusiasm to help people should make Foray both enjoyable and educational.  Rules governing Foray are few.  We expect you to contribute your share toward making Foray a success.  While the Club cannot be held responsible for any individual, all precautions will be taken to safeguard each participant, and all attendees will be covered by liability insurance.

Meals will be good and furnished by our camp cooks.  There will be early morning snacks.  There will be two all day excursions for which bag lunches will be supplied.

Things to take:  Towel, soap, rain gear, walking shoes, boots, cameras, binoculars, hangers, flashlight, and notebook.  You will need to take bedding, including pillow and sleeping bag.  Take books on natural history to loan to the library.  Be sure your name is in them!

“Silent Auction” – A silent auction will be held during Foray as a means to raise scholarship money.  Donated items to auction are needed and much appreciated.  The donor may put a minimum bid on donations, if desired.

Don’t forget to bring a cup or mug to use while you are in camp in the name of conservation.  We will have a Mug Contest.  Prizes are always memorable.
