Eugene "Doc" Hutton
Reprinted from the Mail Bag

We note the passing of a long-time member of BBC.  On March 6, 2001, Dr. Eugene E. Hutton died at his home in Elkins, WV.  We noted Gene's declining vigor for several years, but it is with sadness that we learned of his death.  Several years ago, I asked an acquaintance who lives in Elkins if she knew Dr. Hutton.  Her reply was, "He is an excellent doctor, but he is always away with some fool bird club."  Her perceived loss was, of course, BBC's gain.

Gene married Margaret Simpson on April 12, 1947 who died August 5, 1988.  After several lonely years, he and Reba Pfalzgraf were married on November 4 in Gastonia, NC.  The year was 1990.  In addition to Reba, Gene is survived by a daughter, Katherine Carmichael and husband, Donald and two grandchildren, Benjamin and Katie Carmichael of Gastonia, NC.

Gene attended the Huttonsville Graded School and was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School.  He completed his pre-medical course and earned his teacher's certification at Davis & Elkins College, his masters degree at West Virginia University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia.  He taught at the one room school at Huttonsville and taught at Elkins High School for seven years.

Gene served his internship at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Baltimore, MD.  He was a two-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and served six months in the North Atlantic aboard the U.S.S. McCullouch out of Argentina, Newfoundland.  He then served his residency training at U.S. Marine Hospital in Baltimore, MD., and at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Boston, MA., before coming to Elkins to practice his specialty of eye, ear, nose and throat.  He retired in 1982.

Services were held at the Lohr-Barb-Vance Funeral Home in Elkins on Saturday, March 10th.  Interment followed at Brick Church Cemetery in Huttonsville.  "Doc," as we knew him, will be missed!
