Announcing the 1st Annual Brooks
Bird Club
Cup to be held at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, WV
on May 23, 2009.
This exciting new
event will
challenge your birding skills as you and your team tries to tally the
largest
number of species in one day. The
competition will start at 12:00 am on Saturday May 23rd and
finish
at 7:00pm at the Schrader Center in Oglebay Park. Teams will be scavenging Hancock, Brooke, Ohio,
and Marshall counties in West Virginia,
Belmont and Jefferson counties in Ohio and Washington
county
in Pennsylvania. This large and diverse territory will require
strategy, skill, and luck in order to tally the largest number of
species. Birders from all over the region
are invited
to form a team and participate. The team
recording the greatest number of species will receive the BBC
Cup. Teams representing Brooks
Bird Club affiliated clubs and/or clubs in West Virginia have the added benefit
of being
able to win the Club Cup as well as the
BBC Cup. The club team recording the
greatest number of species will be awarded the Club Cup, while the team
recording the overall largest number
of species will receive the BBC Cup.
There is an entry fee of $10 per person for all competitive
teams. Entry forms must be received by May
1st
to be guaranteed a T-shirt. Also, we
will calculate carbon emissions released during the event and offset
them by
planting saplings at Oglebay.
Those that are not
interested in a
long day or competition are encouraged to participate as part of the Casual Cup. Participants in
this division are free to
bird whenever they like, but will not be in the running to win a trophy
and
will not receive a t-shirt unless they include $10.
All children ages 14
and under are
invited to participate in the Kid's Cup
portion of the event to be held at the Schrader Center
from 9am to11am. Kids will be grouped
into teams that morning and will search Oglebay Park
for as many birds as they can find.
Ribbons will be award following the event. Free,
but t-shirts are not included.
The BBC Cup will
conclude at 7:00pm
with an awards presentation and refreshments at 7:30pm.
All people participating (competitive, casual
or kids) are encouraged to take part in the reception and meet with
birders
from across the region.
The Brooks Bird Club
Cup has been
designed to bring birders together each year for a fun and exciting
event. We envision this event moving to
various
regions of West Virginia
and being something to look forward to each year. We need your help to
make
this event successful. So...grab some
friends, start a team and be ready to test your birding skills at the 1st
Annual Brooks Bird Club Cup!
